Written by Shillah Raymond | December 4, 2023

The Essential Medicines Quantification finalization exercise in Kaduna State, we spearheaded, marked a significant milestone in the revolution of healthcare procurement and distribution in Nigeria. Held from the 21st to the 23rd of November 2023, this three-day event went beyond a routine exercise, propelling healthcare services towards a future that is more efficient, reliable, and tailored to the needs of the community.

The genesis of this transformative change began with a deep dive into past issue data from the State Health Supplies Management Agency to health facilities. It wasn't just about analyzing numbers; it was about understanding the pulse of demand across the state. By dissecting this data, the team gained valuable insights that allowed them to make more informed decisions for procurement, ensuring that essential medicines reached the areas where they were most needed.

At the core of this exercise was a fusion of data and insight, utilizing consensus forecast consumption data, shipment information, product unit prices, and stock on hand data. This comprehensive approach enabled stakeholders to accurately calculate the quantity and estimated cost of procurement for each commodity. It served as a testament to the power of data when harnessed correctly, leading to economically savvy decisions that benefit the community.

The success of this exercise was a result of the collaborative efforts of a diverse group of professionals. Members from the Kaduna State Health Supplies Management Agency joined forces with our Technical Specialist, Bennet Urama to embark on this journey. Their teamwork showcased the positive outcomes that can arise from collaboration across organizations. Under the exceptional leadership of Aisha Isyaku, the Executive Director of the Kaduna State Health Supplies Management Agency, the team's dedication and inspiration were unwavering.

Reflecting on this exercise, it becomes evident that the impact extends far beyond Kaduna State. The insights gained here not only benefit the state but can also serve as a blueprint for future healthcare procurement initiatives in other regions. It is a beacon guiding the way towards a more efficient and accessible healthcare system.

As we celebrate the success of this exercise, we are reminded of the transformative power of commitment, collaboration, and data-driven decision-making in the realm of healthcare procurement and distribution.

We extend our sincerest thanks to every team member who played a part in this exercise. Your unwavering commitment and dedication are the driving forces behind our mission to improve healthcare access across Africa.
